ART FOR BUILDINGS

Rodney Monk is one of Australia's premier public artists. He is inspired by the diverse beauty of the Australian landscape, its flora and fauna, and is philosophically devoted to using public art to enhance the visual and social environment.

He co-authored The Mural Manual (1981) and has designed and painted more than 100 children's murals and street murals throughout the country, from spirited community art projects to elegant multi-million dollar architectural commissions.

Monk's projects include producing the decorative art components - murals, terrazzo carpets, mozaics and banners - for Harbourside at Sydney's Darling Harbour, and the chic retail centre, Skygarden, in Sydney's CBD. Redfern street mural, 'Think Globally, Act Locally', won the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1985.

Currently Monk is working on a series of children's murals for the patient, staff and friends throughout The New Children's Hospital at Westmead. This project is being supported by donations to the hospital from individuals and corporations.

A prolific painter on both canvas and glass, Monk has regular exhibitions at major galleries throughout Australia.

Collaborative work with his glass-artist partner, Giselle Courtney, includes site specific art works. Courtney + Monk Studios has created terrazzo and glass feature art works such as 'School of Fish' and 'From the Beach'
